Water conservation means using our limited water supply wisely and caring for it properly. Did you know…

    • 97% of all the water on the earth is salt water, which is not suitable for drinking.

  • Only 3% of all water is freshwater — Only 0.5% is available for drinking while the remaining 2.5% is locked in ice caps and glaciers.*

Similar to any natural habitat, a swimming pool also has its own life cycle. The pool pump is the heart of the recycling system that pulls water from the pool and conveys it for filtering, disinfecting and then returns it to the pool.

How it works:
Your American Pool technician will treat the water in the winter to ensure that it stays clear and blue, along with treating it for phosphates. We continue to maintain it over the winter with booster doses of algaecide.

When spring is here, your pool technician will shock the water with chlorine to make sure it’s clear and blue. The goal is to alleviate any stains that have accumulated over the winter. Your technician will also start the pump at this time to get your pool filtering. The final step in the process is to completely fill the pool with fresh water in order to make up for the water that was drained out for winterization or lost to evaporation.

The benefits of recycling vs. draining a swimming pool:

  • Water conservation
  • Increases the lifespan of the swimming pool, pumps and filters
  • Less time needed to prepare for the summer season
  • Decreases complaints of itchy skin and red burning eyes

For those whose inner environmentalist was loud and proud on Earth Day, April 22, we encourage you to continue your commitment by recycling your pool water.
