Summer is coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean it has to be the end of pool season! There are ways for your facility to extend your pool season into the fall. Swimmers aren’t ready to say goodbye to pool days just yet. Take these steps so they don’t have to.

Heaters

One way to extend pool season is to invest in a pool heater. Heaters allow the water temperature to remain comfortable for swimmers even if the weather temperature is dropping. There are a few different heaters for your facility to consider.

Gas Heaters

Gas heaters heat your pool by using propane or natural gas. They use this fuel to heat the water before it enters the pool. This type of heater is more expensive, but it is the most convenient option with the ability to quickly heat up your facility’s pool when needed.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps can help facilities save lots of money. They have a higher upfront cost, but they save money in the long run. This is because they have less expensive energy costs. Heat pumps cost a fraction of what a gas heater costs to run per hour.

Heat pumps utilize the air around the unit to heat the pool. Therefore, they require a temperature above 50 degrees to work. This means that the location of your facility will help determine if a heat pump is the right pool heater for you.

Solar Heaters

Solar heaters use sunlight to generate heat for your pool. They’re a great cost effective and sustainable option. Because solar heaters utilize sunlight to work, they work better in certain areas. Facilities in areas that have lots of sunny days will benefit the most from solar heaters.

Fall Maintenance

To extend your pool season into the fall, you’ll have to increase regular maintenance. Fall brings more leaves, twigs, and wind-blown dirt. Therefore, it’s important to stay on top of pool maintenance more than ever. Skimmers, pump strainer baskets, and filters will have to be cleaned more frequently. Cleaning these items more regularly will ensure that you pool’s equipment and pump will continue working efficiently into the fall season.

Lowering Water Level

If your pool has waterline tile, consider slightly draining your pool so that the water doesn’t touch the tiles. Lowering the water level can help prevent damage from an unexpected freeze.

Modifying Pool Hours

If your facility decides to extend its pool season into the fall, you may want to consider modifying pool hours. This is because school starts back up in the fall. During school semesters, consider opening your pool only on weekends (Friday afternoon-Sunday afternoon), or/and change pool weekday hours to afternoons only.
